Steve Blass Day in The Burgh

Saturday, September 28 is officially Steve Blass Day in Pittsburgh.

You can’t take that away. Steve has his own day as proclaimed by Mayor Bill Peduto during a ceremony on Friday at the City-County Building in downtown.

On this day Steve won’t have to work. He’ll come to work, but he won’t have to work because this day is his. We’re going to honor Steve with the pregame, on-field ceremony that he deserves and join with him to celebrate his 60 years in the Pirates organization.

You see, Steve will retire following Sunday’s game so he can enjoy family and friends without the worries of having to be at work for hours on end and days at a time.

But that’s Sunday.

Saturday is Steve’s Day.

There will be tears…from him, from us, from fans, from colleagues. There will be tears because of who Steve has been throughout the years to so many of us. A World Series hero; An ambassador of baseball; A fun-loving storyteller; A trusted voice of the game we love.

Steve has seen us through the bad and the good, and he has done it with comedy and care and most of all honesty.

Steve is one of us. Though born and raised in Connecticut, Steve is a Pittsburgher through and through.

So there will be tears, but there will also be laughs and there will be smiles and there will be memories and there will be hugs and there will be this moment that reminds us all of the romance of the game that we love.

So, as we look forward to the celebration and in advance of tonight, we say Thank You Steve and enjoy your day.

Now check out some pics from yesterday’s visit with Mayor Peduto (we got a tour of his office!) 📸:
